You don't need any app to monitor iPhone, but you may get download the mSpy Control Panel app to view the monitored data. It is compatible with different versions of iOS and its dashboard can also be accessed from almost every browser.
Google also has an app called Digital Wellbeing, which allows you to self-restrict app access on devices running Android 9. This app is geared towards adults tracking and managing their own screen time, but we like the potential of using this app to help older children and teens learn about healthy smartphone habits. Digital Wellbeing is currently only available on Google Pixel smartphones, but will eventually roll out to other Android devices. Both PhoneSheriff and Mobile Spy allowed the installer to turn off user notifications and remove the app icon from the list of installed apps, leaving the phone user generally unaware that he or she is being monitored. Neither app was offered in the official Google Play Store for Android apps, meaning that users had to "sideload" them, a practice that we do not recommend for security reasons. However, both apps still showed up in the apps list in system settings; adults worried that they are being spied upon should check that menu.

If you need legal advice before using parental control apps on your kids' phones, you should contact an attorney or legal counsel. Because wiretap laws vary by state, we do not advocate using smartphone parental apps to record phone calls, either audio or video.
Reviewing and blocking apps is also handled with aplomb, and you can even temporarily unblock an app for a set period of time. I wish that Net Nanny had let me limit usage on a per-app basis, but its management tools are otherwise solid.
Mobile Spy ($100 a year for up to three devices) takes a different tack from the other services reviewed here, with its most robust features focused on logging your child's activity. That's a fine approach if that's what you're looking for in parental-control software, but realize that you won't have much say in how your child uses the mobile device. You can only block apps, not set time limits, and social-media monitoring only works on a rooted device. I was also unable to block callers, though I could set an alert for when a specified number contacted my child's phone.

Many services let you monitor contacts and messages and keep an eye out for potentially dangerous or unsanctioned situations. You can even block new contacts or view message content with some parental control software. Keep in mind that this primarily applies to SMS texts; messaging apps such as WhatsApp or Snapchat typically do not fall under the same scope. Social media tracking can also provide a glimpse into your child's social life, though many services now only monitor Facebook. This kind of oversight usually requires that you either know your child's login credentials or convince them to log in and install the tracker's app. Disabling this kind of data collection is a snap for the child, so here, more than ever, you need to be on the same page.
