Parents can also use it to perform remote voice monitoring. The Wonbo Kids Smart Watch Q50 cannot be shut down on the device itself. It can only be shut down using the parent's smartphone application. Furthermore, this smartwatch allows your child to call you. It proceeds to record the first 15 seconds of their voice for future use. Best of all, this smartwatch can go for up to 96 hours on a full charge.

My Buddy Tag is one of the more reasonable wearable child tracking devices out there. It doesn't work on GPS but rather with Bluetooth. You can set safety zones for your children and get a notification if they cross it, and you are also alerted if the watch is submerged under water for about 5 seconds consecutively. This is helpful for parents who have a pool.

When I put the Trax Play in my son's backpack, I received a notification when he left the geofenced area that I named "home" as well as when he arrived at the area I named "school." (Yes, you can set up multiple geofences within the Trax app.) There's also an option to set a perimeter around your phone and alert you when the tracker gets too far away from you.

The watch runs on the 2G network, which means it's using GPRS in the U.S. because 2G networks are being shut down. (The company plans to release a 3G version of the watch soon.) For a SIM card, any GSM/GPRS network should work. Cheap SIM cards from US Mobile, Ting, or SpeedTalk are a good bet, but Lil Tracker leaves the research and purchase entirely up to you; the company doesn't offer a package that includes a SIM card or service. (However, our review unit came with a SIM installed and pre-activated.)

(Note that there's an additional cost to the Trax Play and any tracker beyond the listed price tag. These devices also charge monthly service fees, which we note in the individual reviews.)

In the case of all of these different virtual threats, which are a lot more immediate in nature, child tracking devices are all but useless. Your child may be up in his bedroom under his blankets, but he still might be under great danger. How do you protect your children if you don't even know what you're protecting them from? This is where spy apps such as Spyzie come in. Not only is Spyzie far more effective in tracking children than most of the devices on this list, but it also comes with a lot of other features that makes it ideal for parents to use on their children.

The bring-your-own-SIM model means you can shop around for cheap service. Your carrier may be able to add a SIM for this to your family plan, so check with them first. And keep in mind that Ting offers SIM cards where you pay only for the data you use each month, with plans as low as $9.
